If you are looking for a climate akin to that of the Côte d’Azur without having a South of France budget, come to the Cognac region of the Charente! The countryside is stunning; the beautiful Charente river ambles along. People walk along it, cycle along it, canoe along it, take pleasure boats on it, swim in it, picnic by it, fish in it. If you feel like a stroll on the beach, you can get to the Atlantic coast in an hour, where there are some gorgeous beaches. If you’re a water skier, there is a dedicated lake. If you are a golfer, there are some stunning golf courses. You will be surprised at the price of entertainment. It’s geared up for families so most of the activities are priced reasonably. Then of course there are the bric-a-brac markets, (brocantes) where if you are an early bird and have a keen eye, you might pick up an antique or something quirky for your new home. The countryside is full of pretty vineyards as the region is famous for Cognac and Pineau de Charentes. The town of Cognac is fascinating. You can take a tour around the Cognac houses, take a boat up the Charente, learn the history of the region. Other small towns include Jarnac and Châteauneuf, both with their own charm, character and history. The larger town of Angoulême is 40 minutes away. It is the home of the Comic Strip and is famous for its annual veteran car race along the ramparts. There are pretty villages and hamlets all around. In the summertime the region is filled with music. There are concerts almost all the time. All musical tastes are catered for. The children need never be bored. There are fairgrounds, fireworks - it’s a haven for kids. Pets are welcome almost everywhere. In the wintertime the activities do not stop. Walk, cycle, go to art exhibitions and concerts, play winter golf. There are plenty of indoor activities for the children.
