The North Haute Vienne is that area of Limousin which lies north of Limoges and is characterised by its pleasing and attractive rolling countryside - essentially grazing land for the world famous Limousin breed of beef cattle plus a variety of sheep breeds. Accordingly the area offers many benefits to those seeking to escape from the hustle and bustle of modern day life (as I wanted having retired from my busy life as a consultant chemical engineer) in a quiet, peaceful, pollution free, and very low population density environment. The area is essentially traffic jam free except for the occasional “Bouchon Moutons” (sheep jam), or a “Bouchon Vaches” (cattle jam) or even the very occasional “Bouchon Poulets” (chicken jam). The area is indeed the “hidden gem” of France whether one is seeking a totally relaxing and peaceful lifestyle in retirement or indeed to bring up children or exploit the agricultural land of the area. The principal towns in the area include Bellac (known as the sheep capital of France), the historic market town of Le Dorat with its famous Collegiale and Magnac Laval House and land prices are lower when compared to other parts of France and the area offers many advantages to those seeking just to live that peaceful lifestyle or indeed to farm at a smallholding level or full scale basis. The area also offers a surprising range of cultural activities, and I have been to some sublime classical concerts at the wonderful Collégiale de Le Dorat. The Festival du Haut Limousin takes place throughout the summer months, with many outdoor performances as well as events at various Châteaux, Churches and concert halls, notably at the Ferme de Villefavard. There is also a small theatre in Bellac, the Théâtre du Cloître, that presents a wide range of productions, from French farce to productions aimed at children and families.
